01 - The Concept
AI can improve performance without necessarily increasing human capability.
Augmentership focuses on the gap between what we accomplish today and what we become capable of accomplishing tomorrow.

The problem
What we observe is not always what we think
| What we observe | What it may mean |
|---|---|
| More output | Productivity gain |
| Faster work | Efficiency gain |
| Fewer errors | Quality improvement |
| Lower workload | Capacity relief |
| Better individual capability | Human augmentation |
| Better human–AI configuration | Distributed capability |
| More organisational resilience | Organisational capability |
What we observe
More output
What it may mean
Productivity gain
What we observe
Faster work
What it may mean
Efficiency gain
What we observe
Fewer errors
What it may mean
Quality improvement
What we observe
Lower workload
What it may mean
Capacity relief
What we observe
Better individual capability
What it may mean
Human augmentation
What we observe
Better human–AI configuration
What it may mean
Distributed capability
What we observe
More organisational resilience
What it may mean
Organisational capability
These outcomes can coexist, but they are not equivalent. Augmentership exists precisely to prevent the word “augment” from becoming a synonym for “automate” or “work faster”.
The four dimensions
Distinguishing in order to assess
Performance
The outcome of an achievement or work episode.
Capability
A reliable possibility of accomplishing a class of activities under specified conditions.
Trajectory
How that possibility evolves over time.
Effective Agency
The real power to direct, intervene, correct, suspend, contest or refuse when appropriate.
What is augmented
Who holds the capability?
A capability can be attributed to an individual, a human–AI configuration, a team or collective, or an organisation. The capability holder, the beneficiary and the people affected must not be confused.
Individual
A person who develops or preserves a capability.
Human–AI configuration
A capability distributed across the person, the tool and the process.
Team / collective
A shared, coordinated and transferable capability.
Organisation
A capability embedded in roles, knowledge and resilience.
Mastering interdependence
The goal is not independence from AI.
The goal is mastery of interdependence, with preservation of the critical human capabilities required to master it.
Individual retention
Which critical skills remain available?
Configuration mastery
Can users employ, verify, challenge, redirect and supervise the configuration?
Resilience
What happens when AI is unavailable, wrong, misleading or unsuitable?
Capability development
Four mechanisms
Practice
A real opportunity to reason and act.
Feedback
Information that allows reasoning or action to be corrected.
Adaptation
Support or responsibility evolving with need and performance.
Transfer
Capability applicable to new or changed situations.

Augmentership Principle
« AI is not the measure of augmentation. Capability is. »
